Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) is helping bridge the digital education gap by introducing Internet of Things (IoT) technology and hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) learning to Orang Asli students in Terengganu.
Through its Communication Technology (CommTech) Section and UBTEC Club, UniKL BMI organised an interactive IoT workshop at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Pergam, providing students with an opportunity to explore technology beyond the classroom.
The school is a special K9 school serving the Orang Asli community, offering educational opportunities to children from underserved backgrounds.
The initiative aimed to make STEM education more accessible while encouraging students to develop an early interest in science, engineering and digital innovation.
During the workshop, students were introduced to basic IoT concepts through practical activities that demonstrated how electronic devices and connected technologies work together to address everyday challenges.

The hands-on approach encouraged active participation, allowing students to explore new ideas, ask questions and gain confidence in using technology.
Beyond introducing technical knowledge, the programme sought to inspire curiosity and demonstrate that opportunities in science and engineering are within reach, regardless of students’ backgrounds or access to technological resources.
Partially funded under the UniKL Knowledge Transfer Programme (UKTP) Support Scheme, the initiative highlights the university’s commitment to transferring academic expertise beyond its campuses and creating meaningful educational opportunities for local communities.
The collaboration between CommTech and UBTEC also reflects UniKL BMI’s continued efforts to connect higher education with community development through knowledge sharing, volunteerism and technology-based outreach.
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the programme supports SDG 4: Quality Education by promoting inclusive STEM learning, SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities by widening access to technological education among underserved communities, and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure by nurturing early exposure to innovation and digital technologies.
