Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET) strengthened its students’ connection to the global maritime professional community through a special industry sharing session with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) on 15 August 2026.
Held at Dewan Kuliah 2, UniKL MIMET, the session brought together more than 100 students from the Marine Engineering and Electrical Engineering programmes to explore international professional development, maritime career pathways and opportunities beyond the classroom.
The session featured Christopher Goldsworthy, Chief Executive Officer of IMarEST, and Ir. Mohd Fadly Asmaii, Chairman of MJBT RINA IMarEST, with Ts. Dr. Zaimi Zainal Mukhtar, Dean of UniKL MIMET, representing the university.
Students were introduced to IMarEST’s international professional network, which connects more than 12,500 marine engineers, scientists and technologists across over 120 countries.

Through the engagement, students gained insights into professional registration, career development, mentoring and global networking opportunities that can support their progression as future maritime professionals.
A key highlight was the introduction of free IMarEST Student Membership, giving UniKL MIMET students access to technical resources and professional networks throughout their studies, while providing a pathway towards continued professional development after graduation.
The session also opened the possibility of establishing an IMarEST Student Section at UniKL MIMET.

The proposed platform could enable students to organise professional and technical activities, expand their industry networks, connect with prospective employers and strengthen their understanding of developments shaping the global maritime sector.
Goldsworthy also highlighted the realities of pursuing a career at sea, where maritime professionals may spend extended periods away from their home countries and work alongside multinational crews.
His sharing reinforced the importance of complementing technical and academic knowledge with cultural agility, communication, adaptability and other transferable skills needed to work effectively in diverse international environments.

For UniKL MIMET, the engagement reflects its continued emphasis on industry-driven maritime education, global employability and professional competency development. Exposure to international professional bodies such as IMarEST helps students understand professional standards while strengthening their readiness to participate in an increasingly interconnected maritime industry.
The programme contributes particularly to United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by expanding access to industry-relevant professional learning, and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth through career readiness and employability development.
It also supports SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals by strengthening engagement between Universiti Kuala Lumpur and an international professional institution, while contributing to SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through the development of skilled maritime engineering and technology talent for the industry.
