Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) strengthened Malaysia’s achievement on the global skills stage after two of its talents earned Medallions for Excellence (MoE) at the WorldSkills Competition Shanghai 2026, showcasing the strength of Malaysian technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in advanced engineering disciplines.
At the competition held in Shanghai from 22 to 27 September 2026, Wan Hamiz Ozai Wan Hamidzi of UniKL Malaysia Italy Design Institute (UniKL MIDI) earned a Medallion for Excellence in Rail Vehicle Technology, while Muhammad Huzairy Mohamad Thes, representing the Mechanical Engineering CAD discipline with UniKL Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI), achieved the same distinction.
The two achievements formed part of Malaysia’s overall haul of 13 Medallions for Excellence and one bronze medal from 22 competitors across 21 skill entries at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026.
Wan Hamiz recorded a score of 705 in Rail Vehicle Technology, while Muhammad Huzairy scored 701 in Mechanical Engineering CAD, placing both among Malaysia’s Medallion for Excellence recipients.
For UniKL, the achievement represents more than individual success. It reflects the university’s emphasis on hands-on technical education, competency-based learning, industry exposure and high-level skills development across engineering and technology disciplines.
Wan Hamiz competed in Rail Vehicle Technology under the guidance of Dr Zaridah Mat Zain, Senior Lecturer and national expert, together with Mohd Firdaus Hassan, who served as national coach.
Muhammad Huzairy, meanwhile, was part of the Mechanical Engineering CAD contingent supported by UniKL MFI, including Ts. Junita Md Said, Principal Specialist and Coordinator for the Mechanical Engineering CAD Skill Advisor and WorldSkills Strategic Team, alongside the national coaching team.
Competing at WorldSkills requires participants to translate technical knowledge into precision, problem-solving and practical execution under international competition standards.
The WorldSkills achievement aligns particularly with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education, through access to high-quality technical and skills education; SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, through employability and workforce development; and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through advanced engineering and technological capabilities.
