The university’s renowned researchers and innovators clinched four gold medals and two silvers, leaving another indelible achievement mark for UniKL on the international stage.
It was truly momentous when three research groups from UniKL Malaysian Institute of Industrial Technology (UniKL MITEC) and UniKL Royal College of Medicine Perak (UniKL RCMP) not only made their debut in the international research competition but also contributed three gold medals.
UniKL MITEC staked their claim with the research projects “Real-time Drone Monitoring with Deep Learning Models for Agricultural Leaf Disease Identification,” led by Ts. Dr. Mohd Aliff Afira Sani, and “KIDCADTECH-CREATIVA,” led by Ts. Dr. Zirawani Baharum.
Adding to the university’s triumph, the research project titled ‘Invention of β-CAPS+: Chemopreventive & Neuroprotective Agent for Leukemia’ from UniKL RCMP made an extraordinary leap from silver to gold, receiving accolades and admiration from the judging panel.
Notably, this research focused on Neolitsea kedahensis, a rare and endemic plant found in Gunung Jerai, Kedah.
By extracting β-carboline from this plant, they developed β-CAPS+, a low-cost and simplified innovation with proven anticancer and neuroprotective properties, particularly against leukaemia. This research is led by Chm. Dr. Mazlin Mohideen.
Meanwhile, UniKL RCMP contributed one more gold to the university through the research project “Christia: Supplement for Blood Glucose Management,” led by Ts. Dr. Vikneswari Perumal.
For the record, UniKL clinched three golds and four silvers in last year’s competition. ITEX is an internationally recognized competition that serves as a platform for inventors and innovators to showcase their findings.
ITEX 2023 has built a culture of excellence and is well-known for its prestigious awards, attracting over 600 participants from local and abroad.
