Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI) strengthened its presence in student-led engineering and aerospace innovation after its SkyForge Team secured 1st Runner-Up in Category 3: CanSat.
They bagged the recognition at the Malaysia Rocket CanSat Competition (MRCC) 2026, held from 8 to 10 September 2026 at FELCRA Seberang Perak, Perak.
UniKL MFI also achieved 6th place among 20 teams in Category 2: 1 km Rocket and CanSat, marking a strong showing against universities and institutions from Malaysia and across ASEAN.

MRCC 2026 brought together teams from prominent Malaysian institutions including Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Malaya (UM) and Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP).
The regional field also included institutions from Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Brunei, including Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore University of Technology and Design, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Ateneo de Davao University, and Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
Against this competitive field, the SkyForge Team demonstrated its ability to translate classroom knowledge into functioning engineering systems through the design, fabrication, integration and testing of its CanSat and rocket technologies.
The seven students behind UniKL MFI’s Category 3 podium finish were Muhammad Alif Danial Fazli Nor, Amir Ariffin Asfarizam, Mohamed Wafri Mohamed Azmi, Muhammad Muaz Md Fazli, Fatin Fatihah Rahim, Muhammad Irsyad Mohd Amroh and Muhammad Hafiz Rodi.
Driven primarily by students from UniKL MFI’s Mechatronics and Robotics programme, with technical contributions from Welding students and members of the Robotique Society, the project demanded more than technical knowledge alone.

It required students to troubleshoot under pressure, refine designs, work across engineering disciplines and transform ideas into systems capable of performing under real competition conditions.
Lecturers from the relevant technical disciplines supported the students throughout the development process with technical guidance and mentoring.
The achievement reflects UniKL’s emphasis on hands-on, industry-oriented engineering education, where students are given opportunities to apply engineering principles beyond the classroom.
UniKL MFI’s participation contributes directly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education through experiential and applied learning, and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through student-driven engineering design, technological innovation and practical problem-solving.
