A Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) lecturer has introduced an innovative Quranic learning method designed to help learners read the al-Quran with correct tajwid more easily, effectively and systematically.

Developed by UniKL Huffaz Professional lecturer Ustaz Muhammad Asyraf Saifuddin, Iqra’ Learning Quran by Symbol (Iqra’ LQS) combines the widely established Iqra’ method with enhanced learning instructions and Rasm Uthmani symbols.

According to Ustaz Muhammad Asyraf, Iqra’ LQS retains approximately 80 percent of the original Iqra’ content that has been widely used by teachers under the Ministry of Education and the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM).

The remaining 20 percent introduces improvements to the learning instructions and the use of Rasm Uthmani symbols. These additions are intended to make tajwid principles easier for teachers to explain and for learners to recognise during Quranic reading lessons.

Rather than replacing the established Iqra’ approach, the innovation builds upon its existing foundation to help learners develop accurate pronunciation and tajwid skills within a more structured learning process.

With at least two hours of guided learning each week, students are expected to be able to develop tajwid-based Quranic reading proficiency within approximately six months, depending on their individual ability, commitment and learning progress.

Ustaz Muhammad Asyraf presented the innovation during the Webinar: Seminar Pengajaran Iqra’ Berimpak Tinggi organised by the Islamic Education Sector of the Putrajaya Federal Territory Education Department, in collaboration with the Putrajaya branch of PEKDIS.

The webinar attracted nearly 400 participants and was broadcast through Google Meet, YouTube and Facebook. It was organised to strengthen teachers’ competencies and introduce more impactful approaches to teaching the Iqra’ method.

Iqra’ LQS is suitable for children, teenagers and adults who have not previously learned to read the al-Quran. It can also support existing readers who wish to improve their knowledge and application of tajwid.

However, Ustaz Muhammad Asyraf emphasised that teaching techniques should be adapted according to learners’ ages, abilities and educational needs to ensure that lessons remain appropriate and effective.

Ustaz Muhammad Asyraf, who holds a credential from Darul Fikir to teach the Ministry of Education Malaysia’s Iqra’ method, developed the module as part of efforts to make Quranic education more accessible while preserving the fundamental structure of the established learning approach.

The initiative supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education by promoting inclusive learning, strengthening teaching competencies and expanding lifelong Quranic education across different age groups.
