Two Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET) students made their mark at the inaugural BEM Young Engineering Innovation Trophy 2026 (BEMYEIT 2026), showcasing how emerging technologies and engineering expertise can be applied to real-world maritime challenges.
Held on 18 August 2026 at Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur, the national-level competition saw UniKL MIMET student Mohammad Izzat Aqlan Mukazimi secure fifth place, while Nur Umairah Shahmina Samsuddin was named a finalist in their respective categories.
Mohammad Izzat Aqlan, a Diploma of Engineering Technology in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding student, competed in the Dublin Accord category with his project, Rapid Hull Weight Estimation of Small GRP Fishing Boats Using Machine Learning Tools Based on Statistical Data.

Supervised by Muhammad Nasuha Mansor, the project earned fifth place in the Diploma in Engineering/Technology category, along with an RM500 consolation prize and certificate.
His project demonstrated the potential of machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven engineering to support faster and more informed approaches to naval architecture and marine vessel design.
Meanwhile, Nur Umairah Shahmina, a Bachelor of Engineering Technology in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding student, represented UniKL MIMET in the Sydney Accord category.

Her project, Further Development of the Structural Design of the Manjung River Cruise Catamaran, was developed under the supervision of Dr. Iwan Zamil Mustaffa Kamal and earned her a place among the finalists in the Degree in Engineering Technology category.
Organised by the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) in conjunction with the BEM National Engineering Convention (NEC) 2026, BEMYEIT 2026 carried the theme “Engineering with Integrity in the Digital Age.”
The event, officiated by Minister of Works YB Dato’ Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, brought together young engineering talent from across Malaysia, featuring 29 innovative projects that addressed real-world challenges through engineering, artificial intelligence, and solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The achievement supports SDG 4: Quality Education, particularly through experiential and applied learning, as well as SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through engineering research, technological innovation and the development of industry-relevant solutions.
It also reinforces UniKL MIMET’s commitment to developing competent, innovative and future-ready engineering graduates capable of responding to evolving technological and industrial needs.
