Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Spanish Institute (UniKL MSI) marked its first national-level achievement at the Simposium Agenda Pemerkasaan Mahasiswa Kebangsaan (SIGMA) 2026, winning Silver in the Amalan Terbaik – Kluster Khas category for an innovative approach to student empowerment and digital democratic governance.
The recognition was presented during the two-day symposium held from 18 to 19 August 2026 at Dewan Ilmu, Kampus Alam, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) Pauh Putra.
UniKL’s winning initiative highlighted how technology and structured student participation can be integrated into the university’s student election and leadership ecosystem, providing students with greater opportunities to participate, lead and have their voices represented.
Representing UniKL MSI were Muhammad Danish Husaini Mohd Redza, a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons.) in Mechanical (Automotive) student; Muhammad Akmal Nizam Nadzri, a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons.) in Applied Electronics student; and Muez Taufiq Yuslian, a Diploma of Engineering Technology in Mechanical Design & Development student.
They were guided by mentors Dr Khong Hou Keat and Zuraidah Md Noor.
Over the two-day competition, the UniKL MSI team presented its initiative through both oral and poster presentations, demonstrating the concept, implementation and impact of UniKL’s approach to student empowerment.
The Silver award is particularly significant as it represents UniKL’s first national-level recognition in the category, with the symposium bringing together participation from 24 public universities (UA) and government-linked universities (GLUs).
SIGMA 2026 involved the Department of Higher Education (JPT), UniMAP and participating universities, with UniKL also contributing as part of the Majlis Sukarelawan Universiti Awam Malaysia (MASKUM) network.
These efforts support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education through opportunities for leadership and holistic student development, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions through inclusive participation, representation and transparent governance practices.
