Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) is strengthening its commitment to sustainable technical education and green workforce development through its participation in the National World Ozone Day 2026 celebration, highlighting the role of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in addressing climate change.
Held on 3 and 4 October 2026 at Alamanda Shopping Centre, Putrajaya, the national celebration brought together government agencies, industry partners, training institutions and the public to promote ozone layer protection and environmentally responsible cooling technologies.
Organised by the Department of Environment (DOE) in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Ozone Secretariat, the two-day event carried the theme “Global Action for a Cooler Planet.”
The celebration underscored Malaysia’s commitment to the Montreal Protocol and the Kigali Amendment, particularly efforts to reduce the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which are potent greenhouse gases commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning systems.

The ceremony was officiated by DOE Deputy Director General (Development), Puan Hajah Azuri Azizah Haji Saedon.
A key highlight of the celebration was the presentation of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) training units to selected agencies and technical training institutions, including UniKL Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI).
The training equipment is designed to support practical learning in refrigeration and air conditioning technologies, particularly systems using refrigerants with lower Global Warming Potential (GWP).
Representing UniKL MFI, Lukman Hakim Omar received the RAC training unit on behalf of the institute during the presentation ceremony.

The contribution is expected to enhance hands-on training opportunities for students and technicians, allowing them to develop industry-relevant competencies in sustainable cooling technologies.
As the refrigeration and air conditioning industry transitions towards environmentally responsible alternatives, technical expertise in refrigerant management and energy-conscious cooling practices is becoming increasingly important.
Through this initiative, UniKL MFI aims to strengthen its TVET curriculum and support the development of skilled professionals capable of responding to evolving industry requirements.

The celebration also saw the launch of two DOE publications: Compendium on Legislation and Policies for Ozone-Depleting Substances (ODS) Phase-out in Malaysia and Training Manual for Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (RAC) Service Technicians.
Both publications aim to improve regulatory understanding and technical knowledge among industry practitioners, supporting Malaysia’s efforts to phase out ozone-depleting substances and encourage responsible refrigerant management.

UniKL MFI’s participation aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
