Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Spanish Institute (UniKL MSI) has demonstrated how mechanical engineering expertise can improve the quality of life of vulnerable communities by developing customised assistive equipment to support the daily care of a bedridden resident in Padang Serai, Kedah.
The initiative, carried out on 18 October 2026 in collaboration with the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister’s Department (ICU JPM) Kedah, saw the UniKL MSI Mechanical Section apply its technical knowledge to develop practical solutions that improve mobility, accessibility and caregiving conditions.
The project benefited Puan Zainab Musa, an eKasih recipient who requires ongoing assistance due to her health condition.
Supported by a grant from ICU JPM Kedah under the Sejahtera MADANI programme, the initiative focused on addressing her specific daily care needs while easing her caregiver’s responsibilities.

Led by Ts. Nor Haniza Bakhtiar Jemily, the UniKL MSI Mechanical Section project team comprised Fazidah Saad, Johan Ihsan Mahmood, Zainal Nazri Mohd Yusuf and Mohd Nizar Azizan.
Drawing on their mechanical engineering expertise, the team developed and provided customised assistive equipment, including a modified specialised trolley, a wheelchair-accessible ramp and a wheeled bathing facility to improve accessibility and facilitate daily caregiving activities.
The team also provided additional equipment, including a stretcher, curtains, and a specialised mattress, to create a safer, more comfortable living environment for the recipient.
The project highlights how applied engineering innovation can address real-world challenges, particularly in supporting individuals with limited mobility and reducing the physical demands associated with daily caregiving.
The handover ceremony was attended by UniKL MSI Covering Dean, Dr. Muhammad Najib Abdul Hamid, alongside the ICU JPM Kedah PMX Coordination Team, led by Deputy Director (Management), Mohd Ridzuan Ab Ghapar, and members of the surrounding community.
The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
