Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) mobilised a total of 78 student volunteers to assist in post-cleanup efforts at the site of the gas pipeline explosion in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya.

The initiative, known as “Ops Mega Pembersihan Pasca Letupan Gas Putra Heights,” saw participation from multiple universities and agencies. The group from UniKL BMI was led by Afiq Razin Abdul Rahim, one of its students and a volunteer under Perintis Team Selangor Zone 2.

“This group consisted of 36 students enrolled in the Community Service subject under the supervision of Dr. Azriaty, and 24 students from the Professional English 1 subject, guided by Madam Siti Rabiah.

“The remaining 18 students were UniKL BMI volunteers who registered independently to participate,” said Afiq Razin in a report.

The cleaning operation took place over two days, on 12 and 13 April 2025, across Putra Heights and Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru, following the tragic gas pipeline explosion.

More than 5,000 volunteers and personnel were involved in the large-scale effort.

In addition to UniKL BMI, other participating institutions included Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS), Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), SAITO University College, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam, Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), Multimedia University (MMU), and the University of Cyberjaya (UoC).

The programme was officially launched on the first day at Arena MBSJ, Subang Jaya, and officiated by the Chief Minister of Selangor, YB Dato’ Amirudin Shari.

UniKL BMI and UIS were assigned to Sector B Zone 5, the area closest to Ground Zero, where the explosion occurred.

“On the second day, UniKL BMI volunteers were grouped with SAITO University College. Together, we cleaned the backyards of houses heavily affected by mud due to the explosion,” Afiq Razin added.

The explosion, which occurred on 1 April 2025 made headlines as flames from the ruptured pipeline could be felt from over 100 metres away.

The incident happened while many Malaysians were still celebrating Hari Raya.
