Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET) is strengthening its role as a regional hub for maritime education and international academic collaboration through the Hybrid Future Leaders Exchange 2026: Navigating Global Learning programme.

Taking place from 28 July to 14 August 2026, the international exchange brings together 175 postgraduate students and eight academic staff from UniKL MIMET, Saito University College in Malaysia and Thiagarajar School of Management (TSM), India.

Combining physical campus engagement with virtual academic sessions, the programme provides participants with an immersive learning experience encompassing maritime technology, applied research, innovation and cross-cultural knowledge exchange.

The programme began on 28 July 2026 with an on-campus engagement at UniKL MIMET in Lumut, Perak. Participants were introduced to Malaysia’s higher education ecosystem and UniKL’s industry-driven approach to technical and professional education.

The session highlighted UniKL MIMET’s academic programmes in marine engineering technology and related disciplines, demonstrating how its curricula are aligned with the evolving needs of the global maritime, marine engineering and offshore industries.

Participants also joined thematic discussions on industry practices, technological advancements and engineering innovation. The discussions encouraged students to examine how emerging technologies, sustainability and applied knowledge are transforming the future of the maritime sector.

A guided tour of UniKL MIMET’s flagship facilities provided another highlight of the programme. Participants visited the Hydrodynamic Wave Tank and shipyard, gaining first-hand exposure to the integration of engineering design, applied research and operational experience in teaching and learning.

These facilities reflect UniKL MIMET’s living laboratory approach, where students are able to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world maritime applications.

From 29 July to 14 August 2026, the learning journey continues through the Future Leaders Exchange Virtual Academic Engagement Programme.

Delivered through a hybrid learning model, the virtual sessions expand classroom interaction into a global digital environment. Participants gain deeper insights into selected marine and maritime topics, international research mobility opportunities and postgraduate study pathways available at UniKL MIMET.

The programme also creates a platform for sustained dialogue among academics and postgraduate students from Malaysia and India. This engagement strengthens mutual understanding while opening opportunities for future academic cooperation, joint research, student mobility and knowledge exchange.

The Hybrid Future Leaders Exchange 2026 supports United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Quality Education by providing inclusive and high-impact international learning experiences while promoting academic and research mobility.

It also advances SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure by exposing participants to maritime technologies, engineering facilities and innovative solutions relevant to the development of a resilient and sustainable maritime industry.

Through its collaboration involving institutions in Malaysia and India, the programme embodies SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, which emphasises the importance of international cooperation and knowledge-sharing in addressing global challenges.
