Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) continues to expand Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) across ASEAN, with a strong focus on expanding access to quality education for underserved communities in the region.

As part of this commitment, UniKL is exploring potential scholarship opportunities for students from the Philippines, particularly at the postgraduate level.

During a recent meeting with His Excellency, the Ambassador of Malaysia to the Philippines, Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, UniKL discussed strategic efforts to enhance its outreach and increase student enrolment from the Philippines.

Among the key initiatives proposed is the implementation of the UniKL Postgraduate Scholarship (Mindanao).

The UniKL delegation was led by Deputy President for International, Industrial and Institutional Partnership (IIIP), Prof. Ir. Dr. Azmi Hassan.

The scholarship programme is positioned as a strategic initiative to strengthen ASEAN friendship, foster people-to-people ties, and support regional human capital development through higher education collaboration.

Under this initiative, UniKL will offer 100 tuition fee waivers for Master’s by Research and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes over a seven-year period, beginning from the first intake year.

The scholarship will focus on priority academic areas, including Business, Information Technology, and Engineering Technology (TVET-related fields), which are critical to regional socio-economic development and aligned with UniKL’s institutional mandate.

Also present at the meeting were Mr. Tan Foo Koeng, First Secretary at the Embassy of Malaysia to the Philippines; Mr. Shahrul Anwar Abdul Latiff, Counsellor at the Embassy; Mr. Mohd Faizal Sharip, Tourism Attaché and Director of the Tourism Office at the Embassy; and Dr. Nadia Razali, Director of the UniKL International Office (UIO).

Earlier, UniKL further strengthened its internationalisation agenda through a student outbound mobility programme at the University of Mindanao in Davao City in September 2025.

The mobility programme was carefully designed to provide balanced exposure to academic enrichment, cultural immersion, industry engagement, and environmental sustainability.

Note: In line with Malaysia’s aspiration to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) continues to strengthen and expand its efforts through various initiatives. This article particularly supports SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
