Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) continues to strengthen its commitment to sustainable energy education by actively participating in the Malaysia Energy Literacy Program (MELP), an initiative led by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

As part of this initiative, UniKL has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with TNB to support the implementation of MELP at the university level by integrating it into the academic curriculum, beginning with the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering Technology (BEET) programme.

The initiative aims to enhance energy literacy and awareness among Malaysians in support of the nation’s energy transition agenda towards achieving 70% renewable energy capacity and net zero emissions by 2050.

MELP collaborates closely with universities, government agencies, regulators, and industry players to ensure that its content remains relevant and aligned with current national energy policies and global energy transition trends.

Strategic partners involved in the programme include the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), Suruhanjaya Tenaga, Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA Malaysia), TNB, MyPOWER Corporation, Yayasan Hijau Malaysia, Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), as well as industry players such as Malakoff Corporation Berhad, CGN EDRA, and NUR Power.

This year, the MELP workshop was conducted from 14 to 15 May 2026, bringing together participating universities and strategic stakeholders for engagement sessions, curriculum enhancement discussions, and updates on the latest developments in the energy sector.

UniKL BMI was represented by Ir. Dr. Rohaida Hussain and Dr. Shaharudin Yub.

Among the universities currently participating in the programme are Universiti Tenaga Nasional, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Kelantan, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Universiti Kuala Lumpur, and Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah.

Through this initiative, UniKL BMI aims to produce graduates who are knowledgeable, industry-relevant, and prepared to contribute to Malaysia’s sustainable energy future.
