The collection of 220kg of used cooking oil, student innovations, renewable energy models and industry-led sustainability sharing were among the key highlights of Sustainability Fest 2026 at Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Chemical and Bioengineering Technology (UniKL MICET).

Held on 10 June under the theme “Speak Green: Inspiring Sustainable Actions Through Communication,” the festival brought together education, innovation, entrepreneurship and community participation to promote practical approaches to environmental sustainability.

The event was organised by students from the Bachelor of Environmental Management and Sustainability Technology (BEMST) programme to raise environmental awareness and encourage more responsible lifestyles among students and the campus community.

One of its major environmental initiatives was the Used Cooking Oil Collection Campaign, which successfully collected 220kg of oil for proper recycling and resource recovery.

The effort helped prevent the oil from being disposed of into drains, sewerage systems and landfills, where it could contribute to water pollution, block drainage systems and other environmental problems.

An E-Waste Collection Campaign was also organised to encourage participants to dispose of unwanted electronic items responsibly, reinforcing the importance of recycling and proper waste management.

Student innovation took centre stage through the Final Year Project Exhibition, where participants showcased projects related to environmental management, sustainable technologies, waste reduction and resource conservation.

The exhibition demonstrated how research, technical knowledge and creative ideas could be applied to address environmental challenges and support more sustainable communities and industries.

Visitors also explored miniature models of solar panels, wind turbines and other clean energy systems at the Renewable Energy Miniature Showcase.

The models offered a simple and interactive way for participants to understand how renewable energy can reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and lower environmental impact.

The festival also strengthened links between academic learning and industry through a collaboration with Bioeconomy Corporation.

Moderated by BioAcademy’s Siti Hajar Fauzi, the industry sharing session featured Khairul Said and Angeline Choo, who discussed sustainable product development, innovation, entrepreneurship and opportunities within the growing bioeconomy sector.

The session exposed students to the process of transforming sustainability-based ideas into commercial products and viable businesses.

Another key attraction was Glam Day, which featured cosmetic and personal care products developed by students.

The programme supported the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13: Climate Action.
