Forty-six Bachelor of Nursing students from Universiti Kuala Lumpur Royal College of Medicine Perak (UniKL RCMP) put community service into action through the Zoo Taiping Clean-Up Programme on 22 July 2026.
The initiative brought the UniKL RCMP students together with external volunteers to carry out environmental clean-up activities across the zoo’s public areas.
Participants collected litter, cleared dry leaves, trimmed overgrown grass and cleaned shared spaces, helping to maintain a more welcoming environment for visitors while promoting greater awareness of environmental stewardship.

The programme was integrated into the students’ Community Service 2 and Professional English 1 courses, demonstrating how UniKL incorporates experiential and community-based learning into its academic programmes.
Beyond fulfilling their course requirements, the students had the opportunity to practise communication and teamwork in a real-world setting while developing leadership, civic responsibility and community engagement skills that complement their professional nursing education.

The initiative also reflects UniKL RCMP’s broader commitment to developing healthcare graduates who are not only equipped with clinical and professional competencies but are also responsive to the needs of society and the environment.

The programme contributes particularly to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4: Quality Education through experiential learning, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities through environmental stewardship, SDG 15: Life on Land through greater awareness of the care of natural environments, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration with Zoo Taiping and community volunteers.
