Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET) is set to play a crucial role in developing the proposed New Economic Zone (Maritime) in Bagan Datuk, Perak.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural Development (KKDW), YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi noted that this discussion builds on previous sessions, where a comprehensive review of the Shipbuilding Technology Excellence Centre proposal was conducted.
He emphasised the critical contributions of UniKL MIMET, Green Tact Solutions-Hyundai, and Perak Corporation Berhad in advancing this initiative.
“I chaired a special presentation session on the New Economic Zone Proposal (Maritime) for Bagan Datuk, a strategic initiative to strengthen the country’s maritime industry and elevate this sector’s capabilities to a higher level.
“To ensure smooth and effective implementation, a special task force has been established to monitor the project’s progress and ensure that every step aligns with the strategic direction,” he said, as quoted in his Facebook post on 8 April 2025.
He expressed confidence that, with careful planning, strong collaboration between industry and academia, and systematic monitoring, Bagan Datuk would emerge as a new maritime hub, benefiting both the nation’s economy and the local community.
For the record, Bagan Datuk is a key part of the Northern Corridor Economic Region (NCER) and is well-connected by roads, highways, an industrial hub, and future infrastructure developments, including a new highway and rail.
UniKL MIMET, Malaysia’s premier maritime-focused institute, is strategically located at Lumut Port—one of the nation’s most efficient and productive bulk cargo terminals.
UniKL MIMET offers specialised maritime engineering technology programs designed to meet the evolving demands of Malaysia’s maritime sector.
Its strategic location and niche programmes provide future talents with unmatched real-world industry exposure.
