Students from Universiti Kuala Lumpur British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI) gained firsthand exposure to Malaysia’s telecommunications infrastructure through an industrial visit to the Telekom Malaysia Submarine Cable Landing Station in Cherating, Pahang.
Organised by the Communication Technology (CommTech) Section and UBTEC Club, with the support of UniKL BMI’s Industrial and International, Industrial and Institutional Partnership (IIIP) Section, the visit provided students with an opportunity to understand the technology that keeps Malaysia connected to the rest of the world.
The visit focused on optical fibre communications and submarine cable technology, allowing students to explore how underwater fibre-optic networks transmit large volumes of data across countries and continents.
These networks form a critical part of global digital infrastructure, supporting internet connectivity, international communications and the growing demand for reliable data transmission.
Through direct industry exposure, students gained a better understanding of the role of submarine cable landing stations in connecting Malaysia to international telecommunications networks, as well as the technical expertise required to operate and maintain these facilities.

The experience also enabled students to connect theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom with practical applications in telecommunications engineering, particularly in network infrastructure, optical communications and emerging digital technologies.
Beyond technical learning, the industrial visit encouraged teamwork, professional networking and knowledge exchange among UBTEC Club members, strengthening their understanding of industry expectations and potential career pathways.
The initiative reflects UniKL BMI’s commitment to industry-based learning and Higher Technical and Vocational Education and Training (HTVET), equipping students with practical knowledge and industry-relevant skills to support Malaysia’s evolving digital economy.
It also contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through experiential and industry-integrated learning, and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, by strengthening students’ understanding of telecommunications infrastructure and digital connectivity.
