Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Industrial Technology (UniKL MITEC) continues to support the Ministry of Health (MoH) by strengthening the Lean Centre of Excellence (LCOE) and institutionalising continuous improvement practices within Malaysia’s healthcare system.
This underlines UniKL’s success in positioning itself as a centre of excellence for Lean Healthcare. Over the years, UniKL has pioneered impactful projects, delivered professional certifications, and influenced national healthcare reforms, making its role not only supportive but transformative across Malaysia’s healthcare landscape.

Building on this foundation, UniKL MITEC co-organised the second International Lean Healthcare Conference 2025, themed “Lean Healthcare: Driving the Future of Health Transformation”, held on 12–13 August 2025 at Bertam Resort, Penang.
The event, jointly organised with the Medical Development Society (MEDEV) and in collaboration with MoH, attracted nearly 500 national and international delegates from Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, and Australia.
A highlight of the conference was the presentation of Lean Six Sigma Green Belt certifications to 13 recipients by UniKL Deputy President for International, Industrial & Institutional Partnership, Prof. Ir. Dr Azmi Hassan, on behalf of the university and the Asian Lean Centre of Excellence.

The conference showcased UniKL MITEC’s significant contributions at both technical and scientific levels. Key representatives included Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohd Amran Mohd Daril, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Dr. Mohamad Ikbar Abdul Wahab, Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Ishamuddin Mustapha, Ts. Dr. Fairul Anwar Abu Bakar, Ir. Ts. Dr. Mazlan Awang, and Ts. Dr. Mazlan Md Zahid.
UniKL’s involvement extends beyond conferences. Since 2013, under the Public Service Delivery Transformation (PSDT) Programme, UniKL MITEC has partnered with MoH to implement Lean Healthcare initiatives nationwide.

Early pilot projects at Hospital Sultan Ismail (HSI) Johor Bahru and Hospital Tengku Ampuan Rahimah (HTAR) Klang achieved remarkable outcomes, including reducing cancer treatment waiting times from 120 days to 30 days, cutting orthopaedic waiting times to 45 minutes, and improving bed occupancy and discharge turnaround times.
To date, UniKL MITEC has conducted over 40 Lean training and consultation programmes, generating approximately RM2 million in revenue and benefiting numerous hospitals nationwide.
These initiatives have transformed hospital operations, fostering efficiency, sustainability, and a patient-centred culture. The Asian Lean Centre of Excellence at UniKL continues to deliver Lean Six Sigma training and certification for MoH staff, supporting long-term improvements across the healthcare system.
