Thirty students from Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Chemical and Bioengineering Technology (UniKL MICET) have strengthened their industry readiness after completing the Professional Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Coordinator Training.
The three-day programme, held from 12 to 14 October 2026 at the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Southern Region in Melaka, provided students with practical knowledge of workplace safety, risk management and occupational health practices.
The participants were from the Bachelor of Chemical Engineering Technology with Honours (BCET) programme, reflecting UniKL’s emphasis on integrating professional certification and industry-relevant training into technical higher education.

Conducted by NIOSH trainer Muhammad Akmal Muzhafar Azman Wong, the programme was also attended by UniKL MICET lecturers Suhaini Mamat and Norulakmal Nor Hadi, who accompanied the students throughout the training.
The training covered essential aspects of occupational safety and health, including OSH legislation, workplace safety management, chemical handling, occupational diseases and hazard identification, risk assessment and risk control (HIRARC).
Students also explored machinery safety, material handling and storage, workstation design, workplace lighting and employee welfare facilities, gaining a broader understanding of the safety standards required in industrial environments.

For aspiring chemical engineering technologists, these competencies are particularly relevant to laboratories, chemical processing plants and manufacturing facilities, where effective risk management and compliance with safety procedures are essential.
The initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by promoting occupational health and workplace safety, and SDG 4: Quality Education, through industry-relevant professional training.
It also contributes to SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, particularly the promotion of safe and secure working environments, by preparing future engineering professionals with the competencies needed to support safer industrial operations.
