Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET) showcased a new generation of industry-ready maritime innovators through the Made in MIMET (MIM) 2026 Final Year Project Competition.

Held on 16 June 2026, the competition brought together 204 diploma and bachelor’s degree students to present technology-driven solutions addressing real-world challenges across the marine and maritime sectors.

Carrying the theme “Powering the Next Wave,” MIM 2026 featured projects in marine engineering, naval architecture and shipbuilding, offshore engineering, marine electrical and electronics engineering, as well as maritime management and operations.

Many of the projects incorporated emerging technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning, autonomous systems, renewable energy and environmental monitoring.

For the record, a total of 70 internal and external judges from academia and industry evaluated the projects based on their technical quality, innovation, practicality, presentation and potential industry application.

Following a highly competitive evaluation process, 40 projects received gold medals. Special recognition was also presented for the best poster and best presenter.

The Best Programme Award for the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Offshore) with Honours was presented to Zarrif Hairish Zariman for his project, ‘Comparative Study on Energy Extraction Performance Between Vertical and Horizontal Axis Tidal Turbines in Dinding River, Perak’.

Supervised by Dr Muhammad Adli Mustapa, the project examined tidal energy technologies and their potential contribution to renewable energy generation.

For the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding) with Honours, Nur Umairah Shahmina Samsuddin received the award for ‘Further Development of Structural Design on Manjung River Cruise Catamaran’, supervised by Dr Iwan Zamil Mustaffa Kamal.

The Bachelor of Marine Engineering Technology with Honours award went to Muhammad Syafi Noor Sazali for the ‘Development and Evaluation of a Modular Force Vector Analysis Apparatus for Applied Marine Engineering Statics’.

Supervised by Ts. Muhammad Abdul Mun’ain Mohd Idrus, the project developed a practical apparatus to enhance the teaching and application of engineering statics in marine engineering education.

Arvinrajh A/L Ponnampalam received the award for the Bachelor of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technology (Marine) with Honours through his project, ‘IoT-Based Confined Space Air Quality and Human Presence Monitoring System for Marine Vessels Using ESP32 and MQ-Series Sensors’.

Supervised by Azhar Othman and Siti Hajar Samsudin, the system was designed to improve occupational safety by monitoring air quality and detecting human presence within confined spaces aboard marine vessels.

For the Bachelor in Maritime Operations (Hons) programme, Nuralia Umratin Mohd Noor was recognised for her research, ‘Determinants of Workplace Accidents in Warehouses for Improving Safety Management System Effectiveness.

Supervised by Dr Nik Norfaraidayu Mohd Zain, the research explored factors influencing warehouse accidents and opportunities to strengthen workplace safety management.

At the diploma level, Mohamad Izzat Aqlan Mukazimi received the Best Programme Award for the Diploma of Engineering Technology (Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding).

His project, Feasibility Study of Weight Estimation for Small GRP Fishing Boats Using Machine Learning Tools Based on Statistical Data, was supervised by Muhammad Nasuha Mansor.

The study demonstrated the potential application of machine learning in estimating vessel weight, supporting more efficient preliminary design and planning for small glass-reinforced plastic fishing boats.

For the Diploma of Engineering Technology in Marine Engineering, Iyad Dani Abdul Razak was recognised for his project, Autonomous Pump Control for Flooding, supervised by Ts. Mohd Shukri Mohd Yusoff.

The automated system was developed to support faster flood detection and water-pumping responses, with potential applications in marine vessels and flood-prone environments.

Meanwhile, Muhammad Aniq Sharofi Mohd Amin received the Best Programme Award for the Diploma of Engineering Technology in Electrical and Electronic (Marine).

Supervised by Dr Ahmad Makarimi Abdullah, his project, Design of a Mini ROV for Riverbank Damage Detection Caused by Amazon Sailfin Catfish, introduced a remotely operated underwater vehicle designed to assist with riverbank and aquatic environmental monitoring.

The projects presented at MIM 2026 supported eight United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being, SDG 4 – Quality Education, SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities, SDG 13 – Climate Action, and SDG 14 – Life Below Water.
