Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Spanish Institute (UniKL MSI) recently hosted the “Chess Series Tournament,” bringing together more than 140 participants from across Northern Malaysia in a competitive showcase of strategic excellence.
The tournament, conducted in a Rapid Chess format, served as a high-intensity platform for players to demonstrate tactical thinking and speed under pressure.
It attracted competitors from schools, higher education institutions, and open categories, reflecting a growing and inclusive chess ecosystem in the northern region.
The competition was structured into four categories, including a dedicated UniKL undergraduate segment, alongside Under-12 School Students, Higher Education Institutions (IPT), and Open Category divisions.
Among the participating institutions were Universiti Sains Malaysia, UiTM Pulau Pinang, and Kolej Vokasional Gerik, each fielding strong representatives in pursuit of top honours.
School students from various districts across Kedah and Pulau Pinang also took part, utilising the tournament as an opportunity to earn co-curricular (PAJSK) marks while gaining valuable competitive exposure.
Beyond competition, the event was positioned as a developmental platform for emerging talent aiming to progress to higher levels of play, including national and international championships.
