Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET) continued its strong track record in innovation and research excellence after securing two Silver Medals and two Bronze Medals at the 15th International Invention, Innovation and Design Competition (INDES 2026).
The competition was held on 14 May 2026 at Dewan Seri Iskandar, UiTM Cawangan Perak Kampus Seri Iskandar, bringing together researchers, innovators, and students from various institutions.
Among the institute’s notable achievements was the Silver Medal awarded to the project titled “Development of Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) for Automated Man Overboard (MOB) Detection and Rescue,” led by Shahrin Azuar Mohd Adam together with Dr. Ismail Zainol, Muhammad Hazim Mohd. Kamal Ariffin, and Mustafa Rosdi.

The innovation highlights the use of autonomous surface vessel technology to enhance maritime safety, particularly by improving emergency response for man-overboard detection and rescue operations.
Another Silver Medal was secured through the project “Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) with Multi Sensor Fusion for Underwater Debris Detection and Environmental Effect,” led by Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Wardiah Mohd Dahalan alongside Dr. Ahmad Makarimi Abdullah and Muhammad Aiman Hakim Madzir.
The project demonstrates the integration of multi-sensor fusion technology for underwater debris detection and environmental monitoring, supporting more sustainable marine and waterway management practices.
Meanwhile, UniKL MIMET also earned a Bronze Medal for the project “Development of a Manually Controlled Underwater ROV for Submerged Pipeline Inspection at a Depth of 2 Meters,” led by Ts. Atzroulnizam Abu with team members Dr. Ahmad Zawawi Jamaluddin, Ahmad Fikry Naim Ahmad Hisham, Amir Muslim Alias, and Hasif Hakimi Zainul Jamal.
Another Bronze Medal was awarded to the project “An AI-powered Autonomous Smart Ferry Terminal System for Seamless, Safe and Sustainable Urban Water Transport,” led by Dr. Siti Noor Kamariah Yaakop together with Ts. Samsol Azhar Zakaria, Muhammad Hazeeq Haqimy Rosli, Muhammad Hazrieq Haikal Rosli, and Muhammad Najib Hamzah.
The achievements reflect UniKL MIMET’s continued commitment towards producing practical and impactful innovations in areas such as maritime technology, autonomous systems, environmental monitoring, underwater inspection, and smart transportation solutions.
