A project on an artificial intelligence (AI)-based predictive maintenance system for industrial machines has won a Gold Medal and a Special Award (Emerald) at the Johor International Innovation, Invention Competition and Symposium 2025 (JIIICaS 2025).
The innovation was developed by Awang Muhammad Nabil Awg Rosmi, a semester-four student of the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Hons) in Instrumentation and Control Engineering, together with Ts. Dr. Noor Huda Ja’afar and Ts. Dr. Mohd Ismail Mohd Yusof from the Instrumentation and Control Engineering Section.
Driven by a passion to solve real-world industrial challenges through practical innovation, the team developed a system that integrates real-time sensor data with machine learning algorithms to predict potential equipment failures.
The study demonstrated an accuracy rate of over 90%, allowing timely interventions that minimise unplanned downtime, reduce repair costs, and enhance overall equipment reliability and operational efficiency.
This innovation also contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by promoting sustainable industrialisation and innovation, and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by optimising machinery use and reducing unnecessary resource waste.
