Etiqa Family Takaful Berhad, a leading insurance and takaful provider in Malaysia, has significantly contributed to Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL)’s student welfare since the early days of its establishment, growing from coverage for just 400 students to now over 32,000 enrolled students.

Furthering its commitment, the group recently contributed RM250,000 in zakat to UniKL for the year 2024, benefitting a total of 1,107 students.

“In addition to being a strategic partner of UniKL, Etiqa Family Takaful also serves as the insurance service provider for UniKL students — a role that is crucial in ensuring their welfare and safety throughout their studies.

“UniKL sincerely hopes that this collaboration with Etiqa Family Takaful can be further expanded, particularly in education financing for selected students to be sponsored in their academic journey.

“These students could also be trained as apprentices, with the hope that they may one day become part of the Etiqa Family Takaful workforce and family,” said Prof. Ir. Dr. Azman Senin, President / Chief Executive Officer of UniKL.

The Zakat Contribution Hand Over Ceremony was held on 28 July 2025 at UniKL City Campus and was graced by several distinguished guests, including YBhg. En. Zafri Ab. Halim, Chief Executive Officer of Etiqa Family Takaful; Prof. Ts. Dr. Zalizah Awang Long, Deputy President (Student Development and Campus Lifestyle) of UniKL; Pn. Mariam Yahaya, Chief Management & Services Officer (CMSO) of UniKL; Ustaz Ahmad Murshidi Ahmad Mukhtar, Head of the Shariah Department at Etiqa Family Takaful; Pn. Zetty Zabir, Head of Division, Group Corporate Employee Benefits; and Pn. Asmah Daud, Head of Commercial at Etiqa Family Takaful.

According to En. Zafri, Etiqa Family Takaful’s zakat contributions have steadily increased, reaching RM36.6 million to date, with the largest portion channelled to the education sector.

“We believe the most effective way to uplift underserved communities is through education. By easing the financial burden on the second generation and improving access to education, we aim to contribute to long-term family empowerment,” he said.
