In line with its commitment to shared responsibility in disaster management, Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) continues its corporate social responsibility efforts by designing and constructing 28 fully equipped rescue boats, to be distributed across 14 states in Malaysia.

The boats, built by UniKL Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET), are for the use of the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA).

The project, which began on September 2, 2024, is expected to be completed by November 22, 2024, with the work carried out at the UniKL MIMET’s shipyard in Lumut, Perak.

As part of the “UniKL-NADMA National CARE Initiative,” two boats were symbolically handed over during the Bulan Kesiapsiagaan NADMA event on October 3, officiated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the Central Disaster Management Committee, YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

The construction process brought together UniKL MIMET professionals, alumni, and students, with strict adherence to industry standards overseen by UniKL Resources Sdn Bhd (URSB).

Six UniKL MIMET students participated in the project under the Teaching Factory concept, gaining hands-on experience with real-world boat manufacturing processes and technologies. Six protégés from UniKL MIMET alumni were also involved in the project.

In addition to the boat handover, UniKL offered free motorcycle servicing, health check-ups, and an information booth on TVET programmes for the local community and youth as part of the UniKL-NADMA National CARE Initiative.

Participating campuses include UniKL MIMET in Lumut, UniKL Royal College of Medicine Perak (UniKL RCMP) in Ipoh, and UniKL Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI) in Bangi, each contributing their specialised expertise to the initiative.
