Italian rail transport company, MERMEC Group and Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Italy Design Institute (UniKL MIDI) are set to strengthen their partnership by exploring new areas of collaboration in railway technology.
The initiative follows a courtesy visit by MERMEC to UniKL MIDI, facilitated by the Embassy of Italy.
The visit was attended by the Commercial Officer of the Italian Embassy in Malaysia, Mr. Anwar Farinordin; General Manager of MERMEC Australia, Mr. Roberto Caporusso; and Dean of UniKL MIDI, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mohd Zaid Abu Yazid.
During the visit, MERMEC explored UniKL’s advanced railway technologies, assessed its existing capabilities, and identified potential areas for collaboration.
A campus tour showcased UniKL MIDI’s state-of-the-art railway facilities, providing the delegation with insights into the institute’s technological advancements and research initiatives.
UniKL MIDI’s collaboration with Italy dates back to March 2017 during the Italian Design Day and has since been continuously strengthened through engagements with the Embassy of Italy.
The partnership was further reinforced by the visit of His Excellency Massimo Rustico, Ambassador of Italy to Malaysia, on 6 February 2024.
Italy has a distinguished history in rail transportation, boasting one of Europe’s earliest rail networks, dating back to the 19th century.
MERMEC’s collaboration with UniKL MIDI presents valuable opportunities for innovation and knowledge exchange in Malaysia’s rail industry.
UniKL MIDI, meanwhile, is home to the Asia Rail Centre, established on 23 March 2016 by Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA).
As Malaysia’s first higher education institute specialising in rail technology, the centre offers professional courses, licensing programmes, and customised training for the rail industry workforce.
