From cybersecurity hackathons and innovation exhibitions to entrepreneurship competitions, Mohamad Ikmal Hafizi Mohd Amir of Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (UniKL MIIT) has built an impressive student achievement record across multiple disciplines.
That breadth of achievement earned the Semester 6 Computer System Security student UniKL’s highest student recognition at the SDCL Icon Awards and Certificate Presentation Ceremony 2026, held on 7 August 2026.
Mohamad Ikmal Hafizi was named the SDCL Icon 2026, the highest distinction presented at the ceremony, while also winning the SDCL Innovation Icon category.
The recognition places him among UniKL’s outstanding student achievers across its 12 campuses, reflecting not only excellence in innovation but also the adaptability, technical capability and entrepreneurial mindset increasingly expected of future-ready graduates.
His selection followed a multi-stage evaluation process involving nominations from all 12 UniKL campuses, which began on 17 July 2026. Submissions were forwarded to the Chancellery on 24 July before being evaluated by internal and external assessors.
Following panel deliberations, shortlisted candidates underwent a final online interview on 5 August with directors representing the Centre for Alumni and Career Services (CACS), Centre for Student Development (CSD) and Centre for Campus Lifestyle (CLD).
The SDCL Icon Awards, organised by CACS with the support of CSD and CLD, recognise UniKL students whose achievements extend beyond academic performance into areas that contribute to leadership, innovation and holistic student development.
Eleven award categories cover areas including community service, volunteerism, leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship, unity, inclusivity, sustainability, sports and recreation, as well as arts and heritage.
Award recipients will form part of UniKL’s representation at the Anugerah Tokoh Siswa Negara (ATSN) 2026, allowing the university’s student talent to compete and be recognised alongside outstanding students from higher education institutions across Malaysia.
Notably, in entrepreneurship, Mohamad Ikmal Hafizi secured Third Prize at the XJTLU Global Dream Chasers Entrepreneurial Competition and emerged as a Champion at BIZPORA 2026 in the construction and renewable energy category.
His innovation achievements include two Silver Awards at the SIRIM Invention, Innovation and Technology Expo, presented for the Air Pollution Level Indicator and Portable Mini Campfridge projects.
He also earned a Bronze Medal at the International EUREKA Innovation Exhibition through the HI Hoshi competition, further strengthening his exposure to innovation platforms beyond the university.
The Computer System Security student emerged as Champion of the Agentic AI-Driven Capture The Flag (CTF) Hackathon 2026, while securing second-place finishes at the Exploiters Flag Rush CTF and OWASP Liga CTF 2026.
He also finished third at BeSecCTF 2026, demonstrating practical competencies in cybersecurity problem-solving, digital security and competitive technology environments.
“I have always been a curious person. Whenever I encounter a problem, my instinct is to ask why it happens and whether technology can make it better. Over time, that curiosity grew into a genuine passion for innovation, especially innovation that can help people rather than simply look impressive on paper,” he said.
He said his approach has been guided by the belief that challenging goals can be achieved through commitment, continuous learning and perseverance.
“Nothing is impossible if I truly commit myself to making it happen. To me, that does not mean success comes easily. It means being willing to learn, improve and keep moving even when the path is uncertain,” he added.
His accomplishments are particularly aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 4: Quality Education, through experiential and skills-based learning; SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, through entrepreneurship and future-ready employability skills; and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, through technological innovation, cybersecurity and problem-solving.
They also support SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, particularly through the development of cybersecurity capabilities that contribute to safer and more resilient digital environments.
