Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) through a joint force with Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA) helped in a clean-up operation at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kua in Hulu Terengganu, one of the flood-affected schools in Terengganu.
The technical university mobilised 36 volunteers including students and two officers, last Wednesday (9 March 2022).
Syazwan Suhaimi, one of the Campus Lifestyle Division (CLD) staff members who were involved in the clean-up operation, said that almost all of the school properties and furniture were damaged due to the ‘sea of muddy water’.
“The students involved are from UniKL Malaysia France Institute (UniKL MFI), UniKL British Malaysian Institute (UniKL BMI), UniKL Institute of Medical Science Technology (UniKL MESTECH), UniKL Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT), UniKL Malaysia Italy Design Institute (UniKL MIDI).
“The situation in this area is quite bad due to the mud which damaged the condition of the walls, floor and school properties. We flagged off to the school last Wednesday, and thank you to UniSZA for providing the accommodation for UniKL volunteers,” said him.
According to news reports, Terengganu’s flood victims increased dramatically on the second day, and 29 more relief centres (PPS) were opened to facilitate the evacuations.
The flood caused the worst damage in Hulu Terengganu district and many homes were flooded with mud.
Earlier this week, traffic in Kuala Lumpur was also brought to a halt after heavy rain caused a massive flood in the city centre.
The city’s drainage system lost its capacity due to the extraordinary rain within a two-hour period.
