Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT) has strengthened its knowledge in aircraft Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GNC) systems through an international training programme under the Industrial Collaboration Programme (ICP) 9.0 in Caserta, Italy.

The programme was held from 31 March to 17 April 2026 at the Centro Italiano Ricerche Aerospaziali (CIRA) and organised by Leonardo S.p.A. in collaboration with the research centre.

It is part of Malaysia’s ICP 9.0 initiative linked to the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) acquisition of the ATR 72 Maritime Patrol Aircraft.

Under this initiative, UniKL MIAT is the designated beneficiary for Project No. 9, which focuses on research and development in aircraft GNC systems, including the development of a System Integration Laboratory to support future testing and integration activities.

Representing UniKL MIAT were its Dean, Dr Mohd Hafizi Shamsuddin, Dr Shahrul Ahmad Shah, Associate Professor Dr Zulhilmy Sahwee, Dr Nadhiya Liyana Mohd Kamal, Dr Nurhakimah Norhashim, Dr Sabarina Abdul Hamid, and Mulia Minhat.

The team participated in specialised training covering key GNC areas, including flight mechanics and control, navigation systems, guidance systems, and real-time GNC rapid prototyping.

The programme also provided exposure to core topics such as flight dynamics, sensor fusion, inertial and satellite navigation, Flight Management Systems, and real-time system development.

Delivered by aerospace professionals from Leonardo and CIRA, the training provided participants with insights into current industry practices and developments in avionics systems.

It also supports ongoing knowledge transfer under the ICP framework between Malaysia and industry partners.

Through this initiative, UniKL MIAT continues to build its knowledge base in GNC systems, which will support future academic development, research activities, and talent growth within the institution and the wider aerospace ecosystem in Malaysia.
