Four student projects focusing on sustainability in the marine field were recognised with Best Awards at Made in MIMET 2026, the Final Year Project (FYP) showcase organised by Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET).

For the record, a total of 109 final-year students participated, representing four programmes: Diploma in Ship Construction and Maintenance, Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Offshore), Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding), and Bachelor of Maritime Operations.

The four Best Award projects were selected for their relevance to sustainable maritime practices and long-term industry needs.

For the Bachelor of Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding, Nur Azleen Mohd Redza (Supervisor: Dr. Iwan Zamil Mustaffa Kamal) received the Best Award for her project titled “Investigation on the Open Water Performance of a Newly Developed High-Skewed Propeller.”

The study examined propeller designs that aim to improve propulsion efficiency while reducing energy consumption.

The Bachelor of Offshore Engineering Best Award was presented to Muhamad Asyraf Hakimi Zabidi (Supervisor: Dr. Nurshahnawal Yaacob) for his project “The Effect of Biochar-Based Agricultural Waste Addition in Cement Mixture for Construction Material.”

The research explored the use of biochar derived from agricultural waste as a supplementary material in cement mixtures, promoting sustainable construction practices while improving material performance for marine and offshore applications.

In the Bachelor of Maritime Operation category, Syaza Izzati Mohd Ibrahim (Supervisor: Mr. Shaiful Bakri Ismail) was recognised for her project “Enhancing STEM Learning Through the Development of Interactive Modules on Ship Motion and Propulsion for Secondary School.”

The project developed low-cost, hands-on learning modules to strengthen students’ understanding of maritime concepts, supporting long-term sustainability through early exposure to marine engineering education.

Meanwhile, the Diploma of Ship Construction and Maintenance Best Award was awarded to Aqil Asyraf Zulazlan (Supervisor: Ts. Kamarul Nasser Mokri) for his project “Interactive Web AR System for MIMET Boat Component Visualisation.”

The Web-based Augmented Reality system enables students to visualise complex boat components in 3D using mobile browsers, improving learning efficiency and reducing reliance on traditional 2D drawings.

Officiated by the Dean and Head of Campus, Ts. Dr. Zaimi Zainal Mukhtar, the event served as a platform for students to present solutions addressing current and emerging challenges in the maritime industry, particularly in sustainability, efficiency and education.

All projects were evaluated by a panel comprising internal lecturers, public university representatives and industry practitioners to ensure technical quality, applicability and industry relevance.

Made in MIMET 2026 supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure through applied student innovation, while projects addressing efficient vessel design, cleaner oceans and maritime education contribute to SDG 14: Life Below Water. The programme also reflects UniKL’s commitment to SDG 4: Quality Education by providing experiential learning opportunities for future maritime professionals.

Note: In line with Malaysia’s aspiration to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) continues to strengthen and expand its efforts through various initiatives. This article particularly supports SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 14: Life Below Water.
