What began as ordinary leg and back pain turned into a life-changing revelation for Nur Liyana Afiera Mohd Fuad, 25, when she was diagnosed with bone cancer.
Just months after starting her first job, the former futsal enthusiast received the heartbreaking news, a moment she described as completely unexpected.
However, true to her resilient spirit, Nur Liyana Afiera, now stands proudly among the graduates at Universiti Kuala Lumpur’s (UniKL) 22nd Convocation Ceremony, receiving her scroll in Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Honours).
“I was supposed to attend my convocation last year, but due to my chemotherapy treatment, I could not make it.
“Despite the pain in my ankle, I did not want to miss this moment. That is why I am here today,” she said after receiving her bachelor’s degree from UniKL Institute of Medical Science Technology (UniKL MESTECH) during the third session.
During her university days, Nur Liyana Afiera was actively involved in futsal, participating in tournaments such as the UniKL Student Sports Carnival (USSC).
Even then, she often experienced back and leg pain, but brushed it off as sports fatigue.
“The doctor said my cancer is quite rare and it usually affects children. But thankfully, it responds well to treatment. I just needed to go through the process.
“I can feel the difference now. Tomorrow, I will be admitted for what I hope will be my final chemotherapy session.
“After that, they are planning for radiotherapy. If God wills, once I fully recover, I want to go back to work and enjoy more of life hiking and doing the things I love,” Nur Liyana Afiera shared.
Though she no longer has her parents by her side, Nur Liyana Afiera said she has never felt alone, thanks to the unwavering support of her three elder sisters, friends, and loved ones.
“My parents are no longer around, but my sisters have been incredibly supportive. I’m the youngest, and they have always been there for me.
“My friends have also been amazing. Just last night, they stayed up all night to take care of me when I was not feeling well. I pray that God rewards them for their kindness. They are genuinely good people who expect nothing in return,” she said.
