Eight students from Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysia Italy Design Institute (UniKL MIDI) have stepped up as ‘Hero Kebersihan’ volunteers, championing food waste awareness during Ramadan.
Their participation took place at the Kuala Lumpur Ramadan Bazaar as part of the ‘Hargai Makanan, Elak Pembaziran’ Campaign, organised by the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp).
The dedicated student volunteers are Muhammad Iqmal Daniel; Nur Ain Farizah Aziz; Nurin Humaira Mohd Nazri; Daing Sumayyah Daing Mohd Bahruddin; Siti Aza Nabihah Tajri; Nur Faridatul Husna Ab Ghani; Luqman Al-Haddad Mohd Khairil Hisham; and Muhammad Shafiq Adham Sharudin.
They come from diverse academic backgrounds, including the Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Industrial Design), Foundation in Creative Art and Design, and Foundation in Science and Technology.
Held on 5 March, the campaign was officiated by YB Dr. Zaliha Mustafa, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories). Also in attendance were YB Dato’ Seri Dr. Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Member of Parliament for Bandar Tun Razak; YBhg. Dato’ Seri TPr (Dr) Maimunah Mohd Sharif, Mayor of Kuala Lumpur; and YBrs. Tuan Khalid Mohamed, Chief Executive Officer of SWCorp.
This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12.3, which aims to reduce global food waste by half by 2030.
It also continues a series of initiatives launched in 2015, focused on minimising food wastage and reducing the amount of discarded food at disposal sites.
As part of the students’ ongoing efforts, they are actively involved in collecting unsold surplus food, which will be redistributed to those in need through the MySaveFood@Ramadan Program, in collaboration with Gema Malaysia Organization.
This program will be implemented at 11 Ramadan bazaars across Kuala Lumpur throughout the holy month.
