Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) celebrates a key milestone in its WorldSkills journey as Muhammad Huzairy Mohamad Thes, a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BET) in Mechatronics student from UniKL Malaysian France Institute (MFI), clinched the bronze medal in the Mechanical Engineering Design CAD category during the ASEAN TVET Friendly Match 2025.
Joining him was Muhammad Zharith Mat Azizi from IKM Jasin, who also trained under UniKL’s WorldSkills Centre of Excellence (COE).
Both participants were selected through the WorldSkills Malaysia national programme and underwent intensive centralised training focused on international standards and competition-readiness.
Held from 23–26 June 2025 at the MyBIM Centre, Kuala Lumpur, the friendly match was a key event under the ASEAN Year of Skills (AYOS) 2025, forming part of Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship agenda.
The competition was organised by the Ministry of Works in collaboration with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).
A total of 12 countries participated, comprising six ASEAN member states and six invited nations: China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Korea, and Timor Leste.
The event featured eight skill trades: Mechanical Engineering Design CAD, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Electrical Installation, Bricklaying, Cabinet Making, Carpentry, Welding, and Plumbing and Heating.
In the Mechanical Engineering Design CAD category, eight competitors from Malaysia, China, Singapore, Indonesia, and the UAE competed. The final results saw China winning both the gold and silver medals, Malaysia (UniKL MFI) securing the bronze, and the UAE placing fourth.
This medal highlights the effectiveness of UniKL’s WorldSkills COE training model, developed in collaboration with WorldSkills Malaysia and supported by the Ministry of Works.
The COE focuses on high-performance coaching, industry-aligned assessment, and international benchmarking—especially in the field of Mechanical Engineering Design CAD.
The friendly match also served as a final evaluation platform ahead of the upcoming WorldSkills ASEAN Manila 2025, giving participants real-time exposure to WorldSkills standards, including Technical Descriptions (TD) and Occupational Standards Specifications (WSOSS).
