Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology (UniKL MIAT) has been officially appointed as the lead consultant for the development of the National Space Incident Investigation Guideline under Act 834 for re-entering space objects.

The initiative is spearheaded by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) through its Space Regulatory Division.

This high-impact engagement session, held on April 17, 2025, was successfully organised by UniKL MIAT and brought together more than 30 representatives from over 20 key government agencies directly involved in search and rescue (SAR) operations and technical investigations related to space-related incidents.

Participating agencies included the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA), Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA), Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Air Division), Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), Air Accident Investigation Bureau, Department of Atomic Energy, Malaysian Nuclear Agency, and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), among others.

The UniKL MIAT project team comprises Ms. Salina Mohd Thani, Dr. Faraihan Zulkefli, Ms. Haslinawati Besar Sa’aid, Mr. Afiq Faizal Azman, Assoc. Prof. Ir. Ts. Abu Hanifah Abdullah, and Ts. Mohd Ezwani Kadir.

The team plays a crucial role in conducting research, collecting technical data, and drafting the guideline, which is expected to serve as a national reference.

According to Ms Salina, the primary objective of the session was to gather technical input and insights from stakeholders as a foundation for drafting the national guideline.

“The document will outline coordination protocols, roles, and responsibilities of each involved agency in managing incidents related to falling space objects within Malaysian territory.

This project is a strategic step towards strengthening the country’s preparedness in addressing risks associated with space activities, aligning with Malaysia’s aspiration to become a leader in space technology and safety in the near future,” she further noted.
