Embarking on a maritime adventure eight years ago, 32-year-old Muhammad Sallehan Abdul Ghafar has transformed his passion for boats into a thriving business.

Specialising in boat manufacturing, repairs, and captivating island hopping experiences, his company, MSG Boat Building, also offers an array of marine activities, from spearfishing cuttlefish to fishing.

Inspired by his father, who built a formidable legacy in the industry before retiring, Muhammad Sallehan pursued higher education at Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET), focusing on maritime engineering.

“UniKL MIMET has been a transformative journey that not only enhanced my knowledge but completely altered my perspective on doing business,” expressed Muhammad Sallehan with a sense of gratitude.

“With the knowledge and skills I acquired during my studies, I have been able to explore new avenues and improve the performance of my business,” he further noted.

Muhammad Sallehan’s father played a pivotal role in shaping his entrepreneurial aspirations.

With his father’s guidance and encouragement, Muhammad Sallehan made the decision to pursue a diploma in Engineering Technology in Ship Construction and Maintenance, subsequently pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding) with Honours at his alma mater.

“My father’s success in the boat business inspired me to carry on the family legacy.

“UniKL MIMET was the perfect choice for me as it offered specialised programmes that were closely aligned with my field of work. The education I received not only honed my technical skills but also expanded my horizons in terms of business strategies and innovation,” he shared.

After completing his studies at UniKL MIMET in 2016, Muhammad Sallehan wasted no time in implementing his newfound knowledge.

Armed with a fresh perspective and a passion for excellence, he continued to steer his boat business, which is based in Mersing, Johor towards success. The annual profit of approximately RM500,000 is a testament to his commitment and dedication.

In February of this year, Muhammad Sallehan decided to take his business to the next level by applying for a business grant, Skim Pembiayaan Ekonomi Desa (SPED), from Rural Capital Berhad, a subsidiary of MARA Corporation Sdn Bhd.

His application was met with success, and the grant was awarded to him on June 8th during the launching of the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) Pavilion at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WCT KL).

“This opportunity will allow me to purchase two boat engines and other assets that will significantly enhance the performance and capabilities of my business. I am excited to embark on this new chapter and take my boat business to even greater heights,” he told.

The grant was awarded to Muhammad Sallehan by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Rural and Regional Development, YAB Dato’ Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, during the event, along with four other recipients.

For the record, the KKDW Pavilion has gathered all agencies and companies under the aegis of the ministry, including UniKL, which showcased its specialised technologies.

The exhibition featured a Railway Simulator by UniKL Asia Rail Centre, UniSERI skincare products by UniKL Malaysian Institute of Chemical and Bioengineering Technology (UniKL MICET), and an Extended Reality UniKL Robot by Malaysian Institute of Information Technology (UniKL MIIT).
