Universiti Kuala Lumpur’s (UniKL) Center for Water Engineering Technology (CWET) has successfully secured over US$130,000 in funding for various projects, including capacity building in pumped storage power technologies for Southeast Asian countries.
This funding was approved at the recent 39th Pérez-Guerrero Trust Fund (PGTF) South-South Cooperation Committee meeting, which included key scientific and industry collaborators from Vietnam, Indonesia, and the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
Through these initiatives, CWET aims to leverage its knowledge and expertise to enhance electricity access in underserved regions, focusing on sustainable, scalable energy solutions that can improve electrification efforts in rural and remote communities.
CWET’s engagement with PGTF began in 2019, in collaboration with the International Center on Small Hydro Power (ICSHP), a non-profit organization under the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).
In 2024, CWET, represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Engku Ahmad Azrulhisham Engku Mohamed and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Ahmad Shakir Mohd Saudi, expanded its participation with a new project in partnership with the National Research Institute for Rural Electrification (NRIRE) under China’s Ministry of Water Resources.
By participating in PGTF initiatives, UniKL, through CWET, is progressively enhancing its role in addressing global challenges related to electricity access and electrification, particularly for underserved communities in developing countries.
Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1983, the PGTF has been instrumental in fostering sustainable development through South-South cooperation among developing countries.
