Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Spanish Institute (UniKL MSI) continues to expand its role in international education by promoting language learning beyond borders through an immersive Academic English Camp for students from Thailand.

Held on 6 and 7 April, the two-day programme welcomed a delegation of students aged 12 to 16 from Seangprateepwittaya Foundation School, Satun.

The initiative reflects UniKL MSI’s commitment to fostering cross-cultural learning while strengthening English language proficiency through practical, hands-on experiences.

Designed as more than a conventional language programme, the camp integrated English learning with technical exposure using a “Prep-and-Practice” approach. Students first developed their communication skills in structured classroom sessions before applying them in real-world, lab-based activities.

On the first day, participants focused on mastering the fundamentals of giving and receiving instructions in English. This was later reinforced through a DIY soap-making session at the Material Lab, where students followed technical procedures to produce their own creations.

The second day introduced students to basic engineering concepts through a Bridge Building Challenge.
After learning relevant vocabulary and comprehension skills, they worked in teams to construct model bridges, applying both language and problem-solving skills in a competitive setting.

According to programme facilitator Dr. Sharmiwati Mohammed Sharif, the integration of language and technical learning played a key role in building students’ confidence.

By applying English in practical environments, participants were able to engage more independently while navigating unfamiliar tasks, she said.

“The transition from classroom learning to hands-on application allows students to see language as a functional tool, not just a subject. It builds both competence and confidence,” she said, noting the students’ enthusiasm throughout the sessions.
