Stepping beyond its role as a leading technical university, Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) is strengthening its commercialisation strategies through the introduction of its Open Distance Learning (ODL) platform and high-value maritime projects.
A significant milestone was marked when these initiatives were officially launched by the Director General of Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), YBhg. Dato’ Zulfikri Osman, during the Naratif Eksklusif Ketua Pengarah MARA on 29 August 2025.

The event, which brought together all MARA companies and subsidiaries, featured the launch of ODL, branded as UniKL FLEX, as part of the education commercialisation portfolio under MARA Corporation Sdn. Bhd.
This platform delivers digital teaching and learning opportunities, targeting working adults and international students. Representing UniKL at the event was its President/Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Ir. Dr. Azman Senin.
Under the maritime commercialisation portfolio, Dato’ Zulfikri also witnessed the handover of certificates of ships from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) to UniKL Resources Sdn. Bhd. (URSB).

URSB secured a RM6.4 million contract for maintenance works on KM Jepak, an MMEA enforcement vessel measuring 22.5 meters in length and weighing 49.5 tons. The contract spans four months, beginning on 21 July 2025.
In addition, URSB was awarded a RM9.9 million contract for the upgrading and refurbishment of the PA18 Patrol Boat, owned by the Marine Police Force (PDRM). The 20-meter, 50-ton vessel will undergo a comprehensive two-year refurbishment starting 3 March 2025.

The commercialisation efforts also extended to the handover of three diesel engine replicas from MARA’s Transport Industry Division (BIP) to UniKL Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL MIMET).
Both the vessel maintenance projects and the diesel engine replicas will enhance teaching and learning at UniKL MIMET, particularly through the Teaching Factory and hands-on training concepts.

These high-value projects, coupled with the introduction of UniKL FLEX, strengthen UniKL’s positioning to meet current demands in education and industry while producing highly skilled, industry-ready graduates.
