Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL) is setting its sights on a transformative journey to expand its global footprint by 2032.
Building on its existing network of 737 international universities and industry partners, UniKL is poised to become a globally recognised leader in education and innovation.
The 10-year plan, which began in 2022, focuses on three strategic pillars: broadening access through aggressive brand positioning and promotion, accelerating internationalisation, and promoting greater self-funding among students.
These efforts are designed to ensure UniKL’s sustainability and global competitiveness.
Prof. Ir. Dr. Azman Senin, President and Chief Executive Officer of UniKL, emphasised the importance of this new phase during his “Majlis Amanat” address to the UniKL community on 23rd August, in conjunction with the university’s 22nd anniversary.
“UniKL stands at a pivotal moment in its history,” Prof. Ir. Dr. Azman declared.
“We are entering a new era of transformation and global expansion. This is our opportunity to secure UniKL’s future and elevate it to new heights. I invite each of you to join me on this exciting journey.”
As part of this ambitious vision, UniKL is launching the Global Degree Program (GDP), designed to attract self-paying international students.
In collaboration with partner universities in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, the GDP offers an affordable path to global education.
Students who complete the UniKL Foundation programme can seamlessly transition into UniKL’s Bachelor programmes while gaining international exposure, language proficiency support, and placement opportunities at partner institutions.
The “Majlis Amanat” marked Prof. Ir. Dr. Azman’s first address to the UniKL community since his appointment around last year.
UniKL has continued to evolve from its humble beginnings into a dynamic institution with a clear mission: to lead in technology and innovation on a global stage.
Although relatively young compared to prominent public and private universities, UniKL has undergone significant development and evolution since its inception in 2002.
Before 2002, the focus of MARA’s educational institutions, including IIM, MFI, BMI, MIAT, and MSI, was on technology transfer. This period laid the groundwork for what would eventually become Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL).
The decade from 2002 to 2012 marked a significant milestone with the official establishment of UniKL. This period was characterised by an intense focus on capacity building and the development of internal expertise, enabling UniKL to create and manage its academic programmes.
To maintain its status as a university, UniKL expanded its network to include 12 specialised TVET institutes and established three key centres: the Asia Rail Center, the Center for Water Engineering Technology (CWET), and the Center for Women Advancement and Leadership (CWAL).
Between 2013 and 2021, UniKL gained significant recognition for its expertise and brand, both nationally and internationally.
This period saw rapid advancements in various areas, including research, franchising, consultancy, and commercial activities.
UniKL’s commitment to excellence was reflected in its entry into global rankings, with notable placements in the Times Higher Education (THE) and QS University Rankings.
Now, as UniKL looks ahead to 2032, the focus is on global expansion. The next decade will see UniKL enhance its global presence, forge partnerships with leading institutions and industries, and improve its standing in world rankings.
“UniKL is committed to not only maintaining its status as a top-tier technical university but also becoming a globally recognised leader in education and innovation,” Prof. Ir. Dr. Azman affirmed.
“The next decade promises significant growth and development as UniKL continues to push the boundaries of what is possible in higher education,” he further noted.
